JJB Stadium will become DW Stadium

After constant speculation, Dave Whelan announced on Wednesday that the JJB Stadium will become the DW Stadium in the summer. The name DW has been the favourite to replace the outgoing JJB and Whelan believes the change in name will lead to a new era for the football club and the town of Wigan.

European football for Wigan would be fantastic if qualification is achieved at the end of the current campaign, especially with the renaming of the stadium to match. Speaking on Wednesday lunchtime, Whelan spoke of how the JJB had helped put Wigan on the map and what the long term ambitions are.

"The JJB Stadium has made the town of Wigan known all over the world," Whelan said.

"Football is such a global sport these days that the Premier League is watched by an audience of billions weekly. It makes me very proud to know that our little corner of Wigan has got such a global profile.''

''We have had some famous days here at the stadium if you think of all the great games that have been hosted since 1999. Now we can look forward to a whole new era as the DW Stadium."

The team will no longer have JJB as the main sponsor on the kit with DW Sports Fitness the likely sponsor to take over the reigns. It is safe to say that the 2009/2010 season is going to be a very interesting one for the club, both on and off the field.
