Dean Ashton is the main name doing the rounds with the Latics beaing linked to a £6 million bid for the England Under 21 striker.

Nobody doubts that Ashton would be a terrific addition to the team, but, Paul Jewell as ever won't be rushed. He told the club's official website: "Yes, I'm chasing a new striker and yes, ideally I'll be looking to bring them in before the 31st of August (transfer window closes).

"However, I've never been a manager that rushes into transfers or buys just for the sake of buying. That philosophy isn't going to change just because we've lost Nathan (Ellington).

"I have a number of targets in mind but I won't be going public with them. There are proper ways of doing things in football and I don't believe it's right to disrupt another club or manager by declaring in the press that I want their player before a deal is reached. That's not how I operate!"
