The 28 year old battling midfielder has joined until the end of the season from Monday's opponents Blackburn. He is hoping to win a deal beyond the end of the season, but Paul Jewell believes he could be trying too hard.

Jewell said: "He's frustrated because he hurt his knee and hasn't had a run of games. He's desperate to win a new deal but he's trying too hard. He's trying to make that killer pass when a simple pass is all that's needed."

Thompson was in the JJB Fitness Centre at Robin Park on Tuesday morning trying to sharpen up his fitness for Monday's game. Also in the gym that morning goalkeeper Mike Pollitt who made his return to the first team against West Ham at the weekend.
