Jewell still harping on about support

Paul Jewell: Plenty of people on board his sinking ship
Jewell brings his Derby side to the JJB Stadium on Saturday and it is unclear what sort of welcome he will receive.

Despite legendary status in the town for his miraculous achievements with the club, the Scouser has tainted his links after recent comments regarding poor support.

There was no response from Jewell to chants of his name at Pride Park when the Latics visited earlier in the season and that clearly signally a cut in the ties.

At least he thinks we have a chance of staying up which is more than can be said of Derby. Jewell said: "Of course there's hope for Wigan this season. I always battled against the odds up there, with people ridiculing us for the size of our support.

"I think Wigan is a brilliant football club and I loved my time there. The people who run the club are brilliant. They are obviously always going to be up against it support-wise, but they have six teams right on their doorstep and they have come a long, long way in a short space of time.

"I think they will stay in the Premier League this season and if people off the pitch have the foresight then they can sustain top level football.

"I have nothing but good things to say about Wigan. I didn't leave under a cloud. I joined when they were a Second Division club and left them in the Premier League and I'm very proud of that record."

Meanwhile, Gary Teale will not be returning to the JJB Stadium with Derby on Saturday after the flying Scotsman was loaned out to Plymouth Argyle. Wigan fans will be pleased there is no chance of Teale tearing us apart again, but no doubt disappointed that the chant won't be aired.
