The gaffer has eased a lot of fans worries with the recent additions of Chimboda and Taylor. He has also confirmed that he expects more to arrive.

Jewell is even more pleased with how hte current crop of players have handled pre-season training, adimitting that they have come back in great shape.

He told the club's official website: "The response from the players in training has been the best since I've been at this club. I have high expectation levels of these lads and I demand a lot from them, but on this occasion even I have to admit I'm impressed with what they've been producing.

"Hard work is a minimal expectation with me! If you look at the best teams in the Premiership; Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, they are also the hardest working in the league, so we have to make sure we match them with it comes to effort.

"We go away to Denmark at the weekend for our pre-season training camp and that will give us an even better opportunity to get the players into the condition mentally and physically we want. It'll also give the three new lads a great chance to get to know everyone a little better and bond with the rest of the squad. I feel we are making genuine progress on the transfer front after the initial frustration and I hope the supporters are now a little more relaxed about our recruitment policy. We beat off strong competition to land Ryan Taylor and we got him through being patient and not rushing in.

"I understand the eagerness of some fans to see new faces here and that their concern comes from heartfelt love for the club, but I do get a little bit annoyed having to constantly justify to people how I run the football side of this club. Ryan (Taylor) is our third close season signing and by no means will he be our last.

"I've said all along I wanted five or six new faces before the season kicked off and I'm still confident of filling the positions I believe need filling. I can assure our supporters that the team that kicks off against Chelsea will be far stronger than the team that finished last season."

Whilst new addition Ryan Taylor has spoken about joining the Latics.

The 20 year old scouser has joined from Tranmere and is likely to be the Latics first choice right back next season. He said: "It's all been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest, but now the dust has settled I'm made up.

"I think it's only just sinking in that I'm now playing for a Premiership club and that this season I'll be coming up against the greatest teams and players in the World. I've had two training sessions with the lads now and you can see why they've been so successful over the past four years.

"There are no egos in this squad and everyone has respect for each other and also the manager and his coaching staff. That's not surprised me though, I knew what to expect before I arrived! I know Leighton Baines really well; we grew up in the same area and still live near each other now. Leighton and me have played a lot together in junior football, so I've already got friends in the team and that should help me settle in."

Whilst Paul Jewell spoke of his new signing with high regard, he said: "I'm sure Ryan can make a big impact in the Premiership! I know he's still relatively young, but he's played a lot of matches for Tranmere and he's similar to Leighton Baines in his attitude and mature approach to football.

"I see Ryan playing as an attacking right-sided player just as much as a right full back. He's got great skill and pace that will trouble defences, so by no means is Ryan only a defender. Adding Ryan and Pascal Chimbonda to the players already here, like Tealey (Gary Teale) and Wrighty (David Wright), we're very strong on the right hand side and I'm happy with that area of the squad."
