Jewell guided the Latics from what is now known as League One, all the way to the Premiership, and managed to keep the club up for two consecutive seasons, also including a Carling Cup final appearance, before taking a well earned rest from the game.
However he has struggled with the Rams. Since taking over at Pride Park, with the club rock bottom of the Premiership, things have gone from bad to worse.
The club finished bottom of the top flight with the lowest ever points total of eleven, and nearly went a whole calendar year without a league win, before the 2-1 win over Sheffield United in September.
A ressurgence in form folowing the United win was a falsh dawn and the news that Jewell has quit comes on the back of only one win in their last nine league games.
The club are however in the last four of the Carling Cup, they face Manchester United for a place in the Final at Wembley. A league position of eighteenth, just five points above hte relegation zone is not what the supporters had hoped for.
During his time with Derby, Jewell fell foul of the Latics fans that once idolised him when he made derisory remarks about the level of support at the Latics when compared with that of Derby.
Meanwhile, the Latics have flourished under new boss Steve Bruce who has added some much need freshness to the setup. The club are now sat in seventh place in the top flight with a realistic chance of European football at the JJB next season.
Chris Hutchings has been placed in temporary charge at Pride Park.
All the best to Paul Jewell for the future from everyone here at WIGANER.net, he did a fantastic job for hte Latics during his time here and it is a shame things haven't worked out for him at Derby.
