Paul Jewell: "It's been a tough summer in the transfer market"
So far this summer the Latics have made just one addition, in the shape of goalkeeper Mike Pollit. And have let three go (Eaden, Jarrett and Mitchell) with Ian Breckin expected to follow them.

A number of recent targets have also chosen to move elsewhere with the most recents being Heidar Helguson and Danny Gabbidon.

This has had Latics fans un-nerved. They had been expecting an influx of players this summer. However Paul Jewell has moved to calm the nerves of fans with today's comments.

He told the club's official website: "It's been a tough summer in the transfer market, but I always knew it would be and there's certainly no panic on my behalf. When I was at Bradford it was difficult to attract the players we wanted straight away, but we were patient and in the end our patience paid off.

"I have never been rushed into panic buying when it comes to players and I'm not about to start now. Bringing players in is easy, but bringing the right players in takes time and I won't buy for the sake of it, that's not how I do business.

"I hope the supporters will back my judgement and my record at this football club and allow me the time to do my job. I know we need to strengthen and that job is taking place behind the scenes. We're on the phone constantly to clubs, players and agents and I'm positive things will start to move for us very soon."

The hint of very soon could well mean that he has something up his sleave, or the comments may have been made as a signing is not expected for the forseeable future. Only time will tell.

But Latics fans have immense trust and faith in Paul Jewell's ability as manager and on view of previous signings, there shouldn't be any worries.

Supporters of the football club will no doubt give the manager until the end of the transfer window to appease their concerns about the squad.
