The Latics boss had enquired about the possiblilty of attaining Ashton but the Norwich board told him that the former Crewe frontman was not for sale.

This has seemingly not put Jewell off who has gone back to them with a massive £6 million offer and he may well be willing to pay upwards of £7 million for the proven goalscorer.

Norwich boss Nigel Worthington however does not want his star man to leave. He said: "The player is not for sale. In fact I'm looking to add to the squad, not replace people.

"There have been no offers for Dean and even if there were any, I would turn them down. The player is staying here."

Meanwhile the Wigan boss has confirmed his interested in Fatih Tekke of Trabzonspor and is being linked with a £6 million bid for him too.

Tekke scored a phenomenal 31 goals for his club side last season as they finished second in the Turkish top flight.

Jewell said: "Tekke is a player we're definately interested in. I've tried to sign him a couple of times and it's one we're now pursuing."

He also confirmed his interest in Leicester striker David Connolly who has already managed four goals this season, he said: "I think Connolly is a good player as well. We need a couple of new strikers and I'm hoping to have them in before the window clsoes. We need someone to get us some goals and need some competition up front."
