Jewell knows Baines will get his England chance

Paul Jewell has commented that Baines is more than deserving of a call-up but believes that McClaren can only ignore his performances for so long.

Jewell said: "I was with Steve McClaren last week at Sir Alex Ferguson's lunch and he never mentioned anything. I guessed by his silence that Bainesy wasn't in.

"He'll probably be a little bit disappointed at not making the squad but that shows you how far he has come in a short time.

"All he has to do is continue playing well for Wigan and if he does that, he will get his chance. Bainesey is a level-headed lad, he will put this to one side and get on with things.

"I would have had no worries about him going to play for England, instead he'll go with the Under-21s."

Baines played for just under an hour in the 1-0 win over Holland last night.
