Jewell: Happy with his players after United performance
Monday's defeat came just a week after the 4-0 thrashing at Cardiff in the Carling Cup Final and optimism was low amoung the home fans.

However the team once again suprised everyone with a top class performance, playing United off the park. Unfortunately the Latics didn't take their chances and were made to pay in the last minute.

Jewell told the Manchester Evening News: "I always ask for 100% effort, and that's what I got out of my players on Monday. I can't ask for any more, particularly in the circumstances against a United side that had beaten us easily in the cup final a few days before.

"But the players answered a few of the questions I asked of them. It was just disappointing we didn't get anything out of the game. But I've said it before, I hate glorious losers, and we've lessons to learn.

"Like in the first game of the season against Chelsea, we had good situations to break, and we didn't make the most of them. At this level of football you get punished. It's a cruel game at times, but that's what it's about.

"The best teams are those that keep going right to the end and are always the luckiest."

A trip to bottom club Sunderland faces the Latics this week where they are favourites to return to form against the managerless Black Cats.
