Jewell: "Don't underestimate us!"

Jewell is unhappy at the pundits putting the Latics down
Jewell, who was interviewed by Anthony Clavane in the the Sunday Mirror Sport said: "For the last few years, as we've climbed out of two divisions, other clubs have been comparing us to Chelsea in that we have supposedly got a lot more money to spend.

"Although it has taken a lot of hard work to get where we are today, this has not stopped others hating us in the same way that they hate Chelsea.

"But this comparison suits me fine. Id rather have people saying that than adopting us as their favourite second team because we keep getting beaten every week.

He also spoke about his fellow manager Jose Mourinho and how he spends Roman's money.

Jewell continued: "Jose is fantastic for English football and I am a great admirer of him. I met him a few days ago and he was very helpful to me - and he said he was determined Mr Abramovich did not get screwed in any transfer deals.

"Obviously I have not got anywhere near as much money to spend as he has, but as David Moyes said to me the other day it is very hard to get quality players - there don't seem to be any around.

"My point is that it's not about how much money you have, it's about how you organise your team. And Mourinho has great belief in his players and they have great belief in him.

"I too have a winning mentality - we have only lost 25 game in the last four seasons - and there is no reason to suppose why we cannot compete on the pitch with every Premiership team this season.

"I wouldn't rule out us beating Chelsea in oru first match of the season. It's a one off and anything is possible in football."

The former Bradford boss also spoke about his time in charge of the Banthams and how he knows what it takes to stay in the top flight.

He continued: "I've done it before and I know what is required. If we play to our best and our mentality is right and the top sides don't play to their best we can beat them.

"But staying up in this league wno't be about beating the big boys - it'll be about taking points off other promoted sides and smaller clubs.

"We have worked bloody hard to get into the Premeirship and we are not going to be whipping boys. It annoys me that people laugh at us although I know I should be bigger than that.

"These people who make fun and patronise us because we are not a fashionable side are not showing us any respect and their words may come back to haunt them.

"Of course if I was a pundit and I was asked who would be relegated I'd have to mention Wigan as a candidate but it would be wrong for people to underestimate us."
