Jewell: Baines for England

The Wigan gaffer believes soon to be gone England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has missed a trick in overlooking Leighton Baines. The young left-back has been one of Jewell's unsung heroes of Wigan's fairytale season, and Jewell believes he should at least by given a chance.

While West Ham manager Alan Pardew has trumpeted Paul Konchesky for a call up, Jewell is extrolling the virtues of Baines, however he believes the 21 year old has not been considered simply because he plays for Wigan.

"If Leighton Baines played for anyone but Wigan then he might have been in the squad by now" Said Jewell, adding: "I think he has been tremendous. He has made massive strides this season, but maybe Wigan aren't sexy enough for some people at the F.A."

The left back slot has proven to be a problematic position for England to fill, due to the absence of first-choice Ashley Cole through numerous injuries and those problems were compounded on Wednesday when Wayne Bridge had to be taken off on a stretcher during England's 2-1 friendly victory over Uruguay.

Yet despite that meaning England are without their first and second choice left backs, who's betting Leighton Baines still won't get the call up his sason truly deserves?
