As well as working on plans to strengthen the squad, Whelan has moved to tie down both manager Paul Jewell and assistant Chris Hutchings down to new long term deals.

Jewell has led Wigan to two promotions and a top ten finish in the Premiership during his five year reign, and is now waiting for his assistant manager to agree terms before signing on the dotted line.

Whelan said: "I have had discussions with Paul and he is willing to extend his contract. But i have also got to open discussion with Chris Hutchings, his assistant."

"I have agreed terms with Paul, but i have still to agreeterms with Chris Hutchings."

"They ar a partnership together and i respect that. They want to sign a contract at the same time."

"That is good and it shows loyalty to themselves and also to Wigan."
