Jewell admits to frustration in the transfer market

Jewell: Frustrated
Those rumoured to have knocked the Latics back already are stars such as Scott Parker, Robbie Keane and Charlton bound Darren Bent.

Jewell said: "I have got a list of targets as long as my arm.

"Since we've won promotion I've had five or six knock backs from established Premierships stars who don't want to come here at the moment.

"But whoever joins the squad will be quality. We only want people who will roll up their sleeves and are prepared to fight for Wigan."

Jewell is believed to be changign his targets to ageing Premeirship players such as Steve Stone and Lee Clark, and also the cream of the crop from the Championship.

However it may well be too late to pick up the bulk of these players with Tommy Miller and Kelvin Davis just two of many to be snapped up by clubs in the Premiership.

Chairman Dave Whelan has commented that he does not blame Parker for joining Newcastle, but this will not stop the Latics being ambitious.

He said: "Parker is a quality player and we did our best to get him.

"But he wants to get back into the England set-up and I can fully understand why he did choose Newcastle ahead of Wigan.

"This is new territory for us and it's why we now have to work so hard establishing ourselves at this level - this is vital if we are to attract the very top players."

Meanwhile, a potential target, Andy Johnson has today admitted that he must leave Crystal Palace if he wants to push for an England place.

"I must leave. I want to play for England in the World Cup finals next summer. That's it in a nutshell," he told the News of the World.
