New manager Chris Hutchings surprising decision to release both Arjan De Zeeuw and David Unsworth, but offer Jackson another cnotract, has left the Latics with little options at the back.

Jckson is Aidy Boothroyds first signing since his Watford side finished bottom of the Premier League.

Boothroyd said on signing Jacko: "With Jay going away for international duty and our not knowing how he will come back, the signing of Matt gives us a player with calmness and an ability to manage the game.

"Jay has been brilliant for us and will continue to be, but we need to give him the benefit of recovery next season.

"It is going to be a grind, particularly the 28 games until Christmas, when we have to break the back of the games and get wins under our belt."

So another legend of the past five years departs. Although agreat servant of Wigan Athletic, many feel the time was right for Matt Jackson to move on.
