Defender Matt Jackson has been with Wigan as long as Jewell, and to see him offered a new deal will please many Latics fans. However Latics manager Paul Jewell says the new contract for the 34-year old is 'totally deserved' and has described his contribution this season as 'tremendous.'

Jackson: Delighted to stay at the club he loves
"His is not a sentimental decision,"
said Jewell: "Jacko is the consumate professional and he reads the game as well as anyone. When he's come in this season, he's never let anyone down. But he is such an immense figure around the dressing room, and that is important to have someone like that around the club. He understands and knows what this club's about and i think he's ttally deserved the chance to stay on."

Speaking to the official website, Matt jackson said: "I am delighted to stay. I love this club, I've enjoyed every minute i've been here and i still have a contribution to make i hope. It's been a fabulous year in the Premiership and we're all looking to be bigger and stronger next time round.

Jewell also paid tribute to the departing Stephane Henchoz, David Thompson and Reto Ziegler

"Stephane's partnership with deZeeuw was a major part of the vital first three months ofthe season when we established ourselves in the Premiership, and his experience was invaluable to us. Reto did well for us but he's gone back to Tottenham now. We wish them all the best."

"Thommo is a good player and i wish we could have kept him here, there'll be no shortage of takers for a player of his quality."

jewell revealed that David Thompson had been offered a new short term deal, but the dynamo midfielder chose to leave and search out a deal with more long term security.
