Ipswich Reaction

Ipswich boss Joe Royle said: "I can't argue that Wigan deserved to win especially after their first-half performance but I have to say it was never a penalty.

"The incident occurred outside the box and the players actually ran into each other. The referee did well but he had one big decision to make and he got it wrong.

"At the moment we don't have a goal in us. We have never been good at keeping clean sheets but the goals have dried up at the other end."

Paul Jewell
While a belated Paul Jewell commented: "I know it's a cliche but nothing has been decided yet and there are still 33 points to play for.

"The result was important because of who our opponents were but it's also a further three points towards where we want to go.

"In view of the problems all week when we had only nine players fit to train I can't speak highly enough of their commitment.

"We did not know what the team was until 1pm today when all the players reported in and I have given them all a day off on Monday to try and rid the club of the bug."

New signing Graham Kavanagh was straight into the starting eleven after barely a few days to get to know his new team mates.

He told the club's official website: "It was a big game for me and for the club and we're all delighted to have picked up all three points. The last few days have been a bit of a whirlwind but I it was very pleasing to pull on the shirt and get out on the field. I felt that I did OK seeing as though I've only had one training session here and it was certainly nice to be involved in a promotion clash rather than fighting at the wrong end of the table.

"The match was a competitive one as you would expect and there was a fantastic atmosphere in the stadium. We are playing for big stakes now and I think that was reflected in the type of game it was. Fortunately we came out on top and I don't think that there is any doubt that we deserved to win as we created all the games good chances. We did tire late on due to the illness that has been in the camp this week, but I thought the fans were then brilliant as they got right behind us when they saw us start to tire. Thankfully we held on pretty comfortably in the end and full credit to the way we defended for that.

"Everyone has made me very welcome and in the 24 hours I have been here everyone has been extremely kind and have not been able to do enough for me. I thank them all for that as it has made a difficult few days for me much easier. Though I had no wish to leave Cardiff and am sad in the way that the move has come about, I have to say that I'm very fortunate to have come to a club like this and I couldn't have wished for anymore from any move to be honest. It's vital that I now do all I can to help this club move forward and my thoughts now are only on the future. I will always be sad about how everything ended at Ninian Park but the fact that I''ve got a move as good as this has made things easier to deal with.

Graham Kavanagh
"I'm going to cherish everything about the chance I have been given at Wigan and make the most of it if I possibly can. I am looking forward to my first full week with the lads next week because then I will feel properly settled in. Today has been quite strange as I don't really know where anything is and have had to get directions to the car park, the dressing room and the Players Lounge and stuff like that. However, people have been brilliant to me and made me feel right at home.

"Though we have won today we all know that there is still a long way to go and that we have a lot of hard work ahead of us yet. I wouldn't rule anyone out of the promotion race because a lot can still happen and probably will. All we can do is focus on the next game we have to play and try to win it. After that we'll think about the next one and so on and so on.

"It is an exciting time to be here and hopefully we can complete the job that has gone so well so far. If we can, that will mean that we will all be where we want to be when the new season kicks off in earnest in August."

Kavanagh did well on his debut considering how long he has had to get to know his team mates. He patrolled in front of the back four very well and mopped up a lot of loose balls.

The Irish man seemed assured in possession and played the simple ball, something the Latics lack at times.

I think the result was deserved but it was a shame the goal had to come from a penalty.

The team played well and Ipswich really looked like a team with no confidence and certainly not a team challenging for the Premiership.

For me Jason Roberts was again outstanding up front. The hard work from the big man is phenominal while he holds the ball up superbly and creates numerous chances for everyone else. He deserved to score had Ellington made 'that' pass in the first half.

Lee McCulloch seemingly had a quiet game but I think he was doing a man-marking job on Tommy Miller. Miller didn't see much of the game and so you have to say that Lee did well.

David Wright did very well at centre back when he came on for Matt Jackson. He looked assured in possesion and didn't give Kuqi, Bent or Bowditch a sniff.

Gary Teale looks like he is back to his old self and looked threating down the right flank, aswell as firing in a number of shots.

Well played Latics, another step closer to the Premiership, fingers crossed!
