Ignorant McClaren offers Baines hope

Richards has little experience at club and under 21 level, while Baines has played for the past three seasons in a strong Wigan Athletic outfit. The 21 year old full-back even scored two screamers in the space of week to further enhance his call-up chances.

McClaren however has opted for Richards in a snub that must be a blow to Baines who has more than earned his call-up.

McClaren said: "I am very excited by some of the young lads coming through from the Under-21s. You have to be careful about which games and get-togethers you bring them in for. It is all about timing.

"But I am looking forward to the emergence of lads like Leighton Baines, Gabriel Agbonlahor - who has really impressed me - and David Nugent. I am also looking forward to seeing Theo Walcott get more games.

"With those lads, it is all about potential. My job is about qualifying for the European Championships."

It also makes interesting reading that Phil Neville and Wayne Bridge have somehow made the squad.

In tonight's under 21 fixture, Baines excelled for the time he was on the pitch before being replaed around the hour mark to be rested after playing a lot of competitive action so far this term.

Should Baines continue to show the level of form at Wigan Athletic he will no doubt be odds on for a full-team spot come the next fixture.
