Hutch wants better football

Last updated : 09 August 2007 By Paul Farrington
His previous spell in management was an unsuccessful period at Bradford. But now Hutchings is ready to show what he can truely do in the hot seat after taking over from Paul Jewell.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "We are looking to do this year what we did in our first season but we certainly don't want another season like last time.

"I feel we are better equipped with the squad we have now. Part of the problem last season were the injuries we picked up at crucial times.

"I have plenty to prove here both to myself and everyone else.

"People keep talking about what went on while I was at Bradford. But Geoffrey Richmond, the chairman, said in his book that sacking me was one of the worst decisions he had made in his life.

"These things happen but I've put that behind me and I'm determined to have a real go at things here at Wigan.

"The new season always brings a buzz and there are some good footballers in my squad. We are trying to pass the ball more and that's no disrespect to what we've done in the past.

"When you have a Jason Koumas in your side, you want the ball on the floor. I admit there will be times when it does need to be in the air, but we need to try to get it on the floor a lot more, and this is what we have worked on.

"We are now ready and there is a good feeling within the club. We look forward to what lies ahead and it's sure to be another interesting season."
