Horsfield Bid Accepted

Last updated : 15 December 2003 By Paul Farrington
Gary Megson's West Brom have made the bid, but Jewell did not say how much the bid was.

Horsfield only joined the Latics 3 months ago, costing the club one million pounds. It is essential that this bid is of at least that value or even more.

Jewell commented that "The Horse" actually lives in Birmingham and so the move would make sense for him. He added that he did not want to hold Horsfield back from a transfer because there is no point having a player in your squad who does not want to play for the club.

"It's a difficult one as we don't want him to go and I've told him so, but you can understand why, with him knowing about West Brom's interest, he might want to," Jewell told the club's official website.

"I've spoken to Geoff at length and explained that I don't want to lose him, but it looks likely that the move will go through.

"We've tried hard to convince him to stay and though it's not a done deal yet, West Brom have made a bid for the player and we have reluctantly accepted it."

This could prompt the Latics to launch a bid for Manchester City star Darren Huckerby who has just completed a loan spell at first division rivals Norwich City.

Huckerby would cost in the region of one million pounds.

"The money we get for Geoff will certainly be used to strengthen and we desperately need two or three more players," he added.

"A bid we made on Friday was turned down and we'll have to wait and see what develops there, although he was back in the squad for his club on Saturday so they may not want him to leave at the moment.

"We made a bid for a second player on Sunday and that's another iron we have in the fire for us to wait and see about.

"If you add to that our continued interest in Darren Huckerby you can see that we're trying to improve, but we're having to be patient."

If Horsfield does leave the club, you know where you will hear it first.
