Heskey supports Rooney and Owen frontline

After two top class performances for the national side, Heskey broke his foot in the Wigan game with Fulham and is expected to be sidelined for a further month at least.

Despite his absence however, the former Liverpool and Birmingham City forward will be supporting England.

Heskey said: "They (Rooney and Owen) are both very good players, they've played in the Champions League and I don't see why they can't play together. They could prove to be a terrific partnership.

"I'm pleased to see Michael making such a quick return from injury. I just wish I was still involved because it's so frustrating, but these things happen. I hope I could be back in contention for the next qualifying games.

"It's not easy watching when you're out through injury but I'll be cheering England on. Steve McClaren has kept in regular touch for progress reports. The protective boot I'm wearing should be coming off next week and then we can decide whether I can step up my work. I hope this is the case because I've been doing a lot of work on the bike and in the gym.

"This is the first break I've ever had. I was only ever out for six weeks when I was 16, due to a cartilage problem. This time, I just went over on my ankle and all my weight was on one side. It could have happened at any time and I certainly couldn't blame my boots because they're the ones I've always worn.
"I didn't go to Saturday's game against Manchester United, I watched it on television, because it's so frustrating not being involved. It was good to be back in the England set-up but then the injury has been a real blow."

England will struggle to perform to the same high levels without the physical presence of Heskey up front as the little man duo of Rooney and Owen leaves the play one dimensional.

Certainly, the return of Emile cannot come soon enough. Both for Wigan Athletic but also the country.
