Heskey puts Wigan first

Emile Heskey during his spell on the sidelines pre-Christmas
Pre-Christmas and Heskey earned himself a recall and impressed in his two games up front for the National side. However he then suffered a broken metatarsel against Fulham and has yet to recover his early season form.

Speaking about his desire to return to form, for both club, and potentially country, Heskey said: "I wasn't aware Mr Capello was at the game until afterwards. But it's always nice when the England manager watches you.

"Everyone has a clean slate now and the manager has a good pick of young, old and experienced players in the country to choose from. At the moment my priority is helping Wigan stay up.

"I want to be performing well enough to drag us out of the bottom three. If the England call comes, it comes - that would be great. But I have to concentrate on us getting some more points."

Heskey was one of three strikers on the field for the Latics last night, but neither Emile, Marcus or Marlon could find the net as Steve Bruce's men went down 1-0 at Middlesbrough. A defeat that has put them back into the relegation zone.

Heskey added: "We were very lethargic from back to front in the first half and lucky to go in only 1-0 down. The gaffer had a few words at half-time and we rallied round and had a good go in the second half.

"We were much better but still couldn't get the point which maybe we deserved. I thought I'd scored but their keeper got his fingertips to the ball and managed to claw it away. It was a great save. That is all I can say about it."

Next up for the Latics is the visit of West Ham United on Saturday with a three o'clock kick off. Tickets are still available for the game and what promises to be a wonderful reunion of old friends.
