Heskey is said to be touch-and-go for next weekend's crucial game with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking about the injury, Bruce said: "Emile aggravated a niggling former injury to his back area and we felt it was best to take him off as a precaution."

However it was good news for Chris Kirkland who has been included in the final squad for the game on the 6th of February.

England boss Capello said: "Emile Heskey's injury is disappointing too, but we have to concentrate on the players who are in the squad.

"I want to be clear that the players who have not made the squad this time are still part of my plans. We will be monitoring the form of everyone very closely as we work towards the competitive matches which start in September."
