It proved to be a first class move by Steve McClaren as Heskey slotted straight into the team, offering the perfect foil for Michael Owen, and adding another dimension to England's play.
Heskey said: "I never thought my chance had gone. I can't really think like that, I always believed in my ability, so you've just got to wait for the manager when he needs you.
"It was nice to get back out there on the field for England and see the stadium and the crowd and everything. I always knew I could fit back into the side regardless."
