The 29 year forward suffered a broken metatarsel against Fulham earlier in the season and the Latics have lost five on the bounce without him.

However it was good news on the recovery front as manager Chris Hutchings revealed that Heskey has been given the all clear to push on his fitness programme.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "The specialist has given him the all-clear to push on now, and that's a great boost. We are probably looking at a couple of weeks, but we'll see how that goes. It is a day-by-day thing.

"We certainly don't want to rush Emile and risk losing him for another month. But, at the moment, it looks like he will be back in the frame this month."

Hutchings is also ready for the visit of Chelsea on Saturday and knows that the game will be anything but easy. He added: "They are a wonderful team, world-class, but we owe our fans one against them.

"We've lost a couple of games to them in the last minute, and come close against them on other occasions, so maybe it will be our turn tomorrow. But I realise that close is not good enough, because we've got to start getting over the line and producing the draws and the wins we need to climb the table.

"We've just got to dig deep and try to go one better. The game that stands out was our first game in the Premiership when a Hernan Crespo wonder goal deep into injury-time denied us. But if we have that steel and belief tomorrow, then we have a chance.

"Of course you get a bit down when you haven't had a win for a bit, but we've got to make sure we learn and be more disciplined. The spirit in the camp is fantastic and we've got to keep believing."
