The former Middlesbrough midfielder picked up his seventh yellow card of the season in the victory over Bolton.
The situtation is somewhat complicated by the Christmas period, but in summary:
Cattermole is suspeneded after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Newcastle on Boxing Day.
That suspension comes into effect for Friday's clash with Tottenham in the FA Cup.
The booking against Bolton will count as his sixth booking of the season (the next suspension comes after his eigth).
Cattermole has seven bookings so far this season, but one does not count as this was proceeded by a second yellow to make a red against Sunderland back in September.
Despite both Sky Sports and the BBC publicising Cattermole's suspension for the Bolton game, it is in fact Tottenham that the midfielder will miss.
Whilst striker Emile Heskey suffered a recurrance of an old hamstring injury and was replaced midway through the first half by Henri Camara.
"We do not yet know the extent of the damage of Emile's hamstring and we have no idea yet of how long he is going to be out," said Bruce.
"But he definitely will not play in Friday night's FA Cup tie at Tottenham."
