Help Andy Liddell

Last updated : 29 July 2009 By Greg Farrimond

For those who remember, and for those who don't, Andy remains the clubs highest league goal scorer with 70 goals over a five year period.

The Yorkshireman gave so much to Latics; his blood, his sweat, his endless effort. He has become engraved in Latics history due to the fact that he didn't once give less than 110%.

His devotion to the cause didn't go un-noticed and he has become one of few club legends and his popularity amongst the Latics fans is bigger than anyone else's.

Fans don't often get the chance to show their appreciation but now we do. Unfortunately though, it is in such tragic circumstances.

Andy and his wife Charlotte were blessed with the birth of a little girl on the 29th May. However, baby Giorgina Grace was diagnosed with Gastroschisis. 95% of the time, operations on this condition result in success. In a cruel and horrific twist of fate, the Liddells found themselves on the wrong end of the statistic.

Little Giorgina sadly passed away 11 days after being born. Something that makes me sick merely by typing it.

After Andy and Charlotte found out the tragic news, they decided to take their baby daughter to Martin House Children's Hospice, a special hospice devoted to caring young children and babies with terminal illnesses. The care they received helped them come to terms with the most tragic event they had faced in their lives.

In memory of his baby girl and in thanks to the people who cared for her, Andy has decided to run the Great North Run to raise money for the Hospice.

This is a great way to show our support for one of the club's most loyal servants for a great cause.
