Watford's Heidar Helguson
The 21 goal striker seemed destined to join West Ham but he was seen at the JJB Stadium and feels that a move to Wigan would give him more chance of success.

The Hornets rejected £1 million approaches from Sheffield United and Sunderland and are believed to have accepted bids from the Latics and Hammers for a fee in the region of £1.5 million.

The 27 year old has shown a real interest in joining the Latics who are more likely to be in the Premiership this time next year than the Hammers who have £25 million of debt hanging over their heads.

It is also believed that the Latics have offered a slightly better deal and Helguson will join Roberts and Ellington amoungst the highest earners at the JJB.

Hornets boss Adrian Boothroyd has already admitted that he is likely to lose the Icelandic international during the summer and Helguson is expected to announce his decision later in the week.

In other transfer news, the Latics have been linked with Steve Stone who was released by Portsmouth at the end of last season.

He was a name mentioned here over a month ago now.
