Great day for Wigan

Last updated : 01 January 2005 By Paul Farrington
In the early kick off, leaders Ipswich Town lost 2-0 to West Ham United. Goals at the start and the death from Harewood and Etherington respectively mean that gap at the top has been cut to two points from five.

Stan Ternent's Gillingham managed a good draw at home to Reading. Only three shots hit the target all game in this dull affair that ended goal less. Glen Little was the star in this one.

Richard Cresswell: Hat-trick for North End today
Neighbours Preston also did us a big favour with a 3-2 home win over Sunderland who started the day in second place. Richard Cresswell got a hat trick to but the Lilly Whites 3-0 up before second half goals from Elliot and Thornton for Sunderland led to a tense last ten minutes. North End however held out for the win.

Watford also managed a good win over Millwall in this London derby. Millwall started the day just five points behind ourselves. Heidar Helguson got the only goal of the game.

Meanwhile the game at Turf Moor was abandoned after nineteen minutes. Referee Graham Laws had to call the game off as the Burnley pitch just couldn't take any more water. He said: “At 3:00 p.m. the pitch was playable but as the game went on it got worse.

“The injury to Brian Jensen was due to the ball sticking short and more players were concerned for their safety.

“The ball was sticking in the centre and the weather wasn’t getting any better, so after nineteen minutes I decided to call the game off.”

With pitch technology nowadays this sort of farce should not occur. Obviously the Dingles haven't the money to invest in a proper pitch!
