Flower Boy Scharner

Paul Scharner: Wanted Flowers
The game against Birmingham on Saturday saw the Austrian play in his 73rd league game for the Latics, breaking the record.

Scharner said: "I didn't get flowers. I was expecting flowers before the game," no doubt tongue in cheek.

"It's hard to believe I'm one of the most experienced players here in terms of games, because I only signed two years and three months ago.

"There's only Mike Pollitt, Ryan Taylor and Josip Skoko who have been here longer. Things have changed a lot."

Whilst speaking about Bruce and next season, Scharner added: "Steve Bruce is a big character and is just what the club needed. I expected more from the team this season, but the Premier League is one of the hardest around.

"It's very difficult to play in, especially for a club like Wigan, but I'm positive we can establish ourselves in it. This season I expected us to climb into the top half of the table. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.

"But recently we've shown what we could be capable of. We've picked up a lot of points at home and Steve Bruce has brought something new to us. He knows what is needed to stay in this league, so maybe we can do better next season."
