Ellington told the Wigan Observer: “There’s no fear going into the Chelsea game or any other – we’ll treat any match this season the same.

“We’re going in to win it and we all believe we can cause an upset and get off to a winning start.”

“Chelsea have got world class players all over the pitch as everyone knows. But we believe that we can beat them. We can’t go into this being negative because we’ll never win.

“We’ll need to match them for work rate and then hopefully take one or two chances when they come our way. I wasn’t fully fit towards the end of last season because of my shoulder. But I’ve had the operation and now I feel fine.”

“I belive I can score goals in the Premier League. As a striker you’ve always got to back yourself and believe in your own ability. It would be great to get off to a scoring start because that just increases your confidence even more.”

The 24 year old knows that he is facing the biggest challenge of his career, but he is looking forward to it.

He continued: “It will be really weird coming up against the likes of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho. I watch them every week on the television and now I’m going to be coming up against them.

“They are two of the best defenders in the world. But they are only human and hopefully we can cause them trouble.”

“It’s a great start to play against the champions in our first ever game. When you go up to the Premiership you want a big team first up.

“We didn’t want a team who had just played in the Championship because it just wouldn’t feel the same. That would have been a bit of an anti-climax.”

Come on Nathan, sign that contract!
