Ellington in talks with WBA

Nathan Ellington
The 24 year old striker has yet to sign an improved deal at the JJB Stadium. With just one year left on his current deal and a £3 million escape clause in the contract, the Duke has chosen to speak to West Brom.

The Baggies have activated that clause with their £3 million bid and Ellington is in talks with the Baggies today.

Albion manager Bryan Robson said: "Nathan is a great athlete, very strong and quick. He has got a good goalscoring record. That's the reason we have put a bid in and why we are trying to sign him."

From a personal point of view, if Ellington is not prepared to accept the deal that is on the table then he will have to leave and a fee of £3 million is a fair price. Especially given the current market.

My other view is that West Brom cannot offer much more than the Latics. They are also set to be involved in a relegation dog fight this season and are a club of similar stature off the field.

The Baggies currently have five strikers (EllingtonCampbell, Horsefield, Earnshaw, Kanu and £1.5 million new boy Kamara) who are already on Premeirship wages and surely cannot afford the expenditure of the Duke.

Not only does he come with a hefty transfer fee but his wages are not likely to be cheap (believed to be in the region of £20,000 a week including bonuses).

The decision is of course Ellington's to make, but I feel that his advisors are just in for a transfer payday and are trying to persuade the Duke away from the JJB in a bid to line their own pockets.

He would also have to pass a medical. Something that may prove difficult given his troublesome shoulder.

Ellington is loved at the JJB and the Latics supporters hope he stays with the club as we make further progress and bid to stay in the Barclays Premiership.

Should the Duke leave then a big money move for Norwich's Dean Ashton or Crystal Palace's Andy Johnson could well be on the cards.
