This will come as great news to all Latics fans who will no doubt welcome the Duke's return to first team action after a lengthy injury lay-off.

Jewell said: "We've had the all clear from the specialist and the pain from his knee is nothing more than bone bruising apparently. We'll look to step up his work this week and will monitor him very carefully.

"There's not chance of him starting on Saturday at Burnley but if all goes well on the training ground I'll have a chat with him later in the week and there may be a chance that he could me the bench."

Ellington has been missing since the tail of the Championship season with knee and shoulder trouble.

He was forced to have operations on both problems and it has been the knee injury that has restricted him this season. however now this s cleared up he could soon be back in first team action.
