Latics boss Paul Jewell made a bid for Albion trio Gera, Ellington and teammate Curtis Davies in the summer. This was said to be for around £10 million but was rebuffed by the Baggies under then boss Bryan Robson.

Robson has since left the club and been replaced by former Hibs boss Tony Mowbray who seems more than happy to let Ellington go along with right-sided midfielder Zolton Gera.

The Daily Star is reporting that a combined fee of £5 million will be enough for the Baggies and Paul Jewell is more than likely to agree to this fee.

Meanwhile the same newspaper is reporting that ourselves and Charlton are interested in out of favour Everton striker James Beattie.

The 28 year old forward is said to seek a move away from Goodison Park in search of first team football.

Paul Jewell commented: "We badly need another striker. Emile Heskey needs someone to partner him and Henri Camara is out with a knee injury. We need someone in pretty quickly.

"Maybe we need to go back to the basics because we are conceding too many goals. We need leaders, because I said all along this was going to be a hard season."
