The injury unfortunately rules the defender out of his countries Euro 2008 campaign and will be a big blow to both the club and Edman personally.

Manager Steve Bruce said: "It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural, and we will certainly miss him. He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best."

Meanwhile, with the suspensions of Wilson Palacios (red card) and Michael Brown (10 yellows) comes a recall for Australian midfielder Josip Skoko.

The 32 year old midfielder has seen his chances in hte first team restricted this term but is likely to get a chance on Saturday as the Latics visit Portsmouth.

A start for Skoko would be his first in four months for the Latics, although Bruce may be tempted to move Valencia into the middle of the field and play with Ryan Taylor on the right hand side.

Also in the news, former club captain and legend Arjan De Zeeuw, now37 was released by Coventry City last week as new boss Chris Coleman put his hand to the squad.

All is not bleak for the Dutchman however as both Sheffield United and Barsnley are interested in his services.
