Lee McCulloch
Graham Kavanagh and Lee McCulloch are the major doubts whilst goalkeeper John Filan and defender Emerson Thome are definitely ruled out.

Irish International Kavanagh has a damaged heel. The injury was picked up in the friendly with Accrington and he is rated at no better than 50/50. Jewell said: “Graham is struggling, he has got a problem with his heel.”

He also spoke about the knock which Lee McCulloch picked up in the same game, Jewell added: “Hopefully Lee McCulloch will be okay. He has got a dead leg and tweaked his knee.”

The Latics boss seems to be struggling to pick out his best eleven and revealed that he may only pick his side on Saturday. He continued: “I don’t know my best team yet. It could well go up to Saturday before I select the squad.

“There will be a lot of disappointed players this weekend. But I can’t afford them to be throwing their toys out of the pram if they don’t get in. Over the past four or five years, the team has picked itself.”

Meanwhile, Arjan De Zeeuw could well have joined in time for the clash on Sunday. A fee of £100,000 has been agreed between the two clubs and he can’t see any problems with the transfer.

The 35 year old Dutchman told the Wigan Observer: “I’m going to be talking to Paul [Jewell] today (Tuesday) about coming back to Wigan. The sooner this move happens for me the better.

“Obviously the season kicks-off for Wigan on Sunday, but hopefully it will all be sorted before then. I’ve got a year left on my contract at Portsmouth and they have offered me a one year extension.

“But I want to come back to Wigan and hopefully it will happen. I loved my time at Wigan. It was a hard decision to leave, but coming back now would be the perfect move for me.”
