Wigan and Cardiff had to settle for a point apiece in the top-of-the-table clash as Oldham stole ahead in the race for the Division Two title.

In the big game at the JJB Stadium, the Bluebirds needed a late strike from the prolific Robert Earnshaw to salvage a point.

The Welsh striker had given Cardiff a first-half lead, only for Wigan to hit back before half-time through Tony Dinning and Worthington Cup hat-trick hero Nathan Ellington.

The result allowed Oldham to edge a point clear at the top thanks to their narrow win at lowly Swindon.

Lee Duxbury was the match-winner with a fifth-minute effort, though the visitors had to survive a nervous second period after seing Julian Baudet sent off two minutes before the break.

Haworth :: Sent off again
Queens Park Rangers spurned their opportunity to return to the summit, Paul Furlong missing a penalty a they went down to Steve Jones' double for Crewe at Gresty Road.

Elsewhere, Scott Murray struck a last-gasp double as Bristol City sneaked into the play-off places with a 4-0 pasting of Chesterfield.

But the award for best result of the day goes to Mansfield, who recovered from a one-goal half-time deficit to thump Tranmere 6-1, thanks in part to Iyseden Christie's brace. Simon Haworth was sent off for the visitors.

The Stags remain just one place off the bottom, though, a single point ahead of Cheltenham, who went down 3-1 at Blackpool.
