35 year old De Zeeuw will go straight into the squad for the opening game with Champions Chelsea on Sunday and may even get a starting spot.

This is his second spell with the club after he initially joined from Barnsley, gonig on to make 140 appearances for the club.

The former Latics skipper has spoken to the club's official website. He said: "I can hardly believe I'm back at Wigan but I'm absolutely delighted to return to a club I have so much time and respect for. My first spell here was hugely enjoyable and it was a great honour being the skipper for most of that time. Returning to work with Paul Jewell is a big factor in me joining Wigan again. My final season here was his first and I knew then he would go on to have great success at Wigan Athletic. He is such a strong character and gets the best out of his players. I have no doubt he has what it takes to prove everyone wrong and keep us in the Premiership.

"I leave Portsmouth with no hard feelings at all and I genuinely hope they continue the success the club has enjoyed while I've been there. Being captain of Portsmouth was an honour I cherished and the memories of promotion to the Premiership and staying there for two seasons will live with me forever. In particular I'd like to thank the Pompey fans that made my family and me so welcome. They are a unique bunch of fans with so much passion for game and Pompey in particular.

"I don't know what team the gaffer (Paul Jewell) will pick for Sunday's game against Chelsea, but if I am included it will be a tremendous game to make my return in. They were the best team in the land last season by some distance and I know it'll be a stern test for the entire club to face them on the opening day, but it's a challenge I relish. We must respect Chelsea but not fear Chelsea and that's the attitude I'll have if selected."
