The former Ajax Amsterdam winger hardly played for Birmingham during McLeish's tenure in the top flight, despite impressing whilst Bruce was at the club.

Now, the Latics are believed to be one of a host of clubs chasing the signature of the Holland under 21 international with both current full back Mario Melchiot, and former midfielder Denny Landzaat - both former Ajax players - said to have recommended the Latics to De Ridder.

De Ridder's agent, Mino Raiola, confirmed that their are many clubs ionterested in his client, with a number of those in England.

"There is some interest in Daniel as he is a quality player. There are clubs in England and abroad who are looking at him. We will try and resolve something with Birmingham to suit everyone," he said.

Former transfer target Ross McCormack has left Scottish Premier League side Motherwell to join up with Cardiff City in the Championship.

The big spending Blue Birds beat Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and the Latics to land McCormack who turned down top flight football for a guaranteed first team place.

He said: "I'm excited to be joining a big club who are going places. I couldn't turn the move down. I was really impressed with everything Colin (Calderwood) said at Forest.

"The Wigan deal was also still on the table, so I could have gone to the Premiership. But I just felt I'd have more chance of playing regularly at Cardiff. After speaking with the manager and chairman my mind was made up."

Meanwhile, Tranmere took the Merseyside Masters last night with the Latics finishing bottom after being robbed of their star players. Stuart Barlow and Ged Brannan were playing for Tranmere, whilst Kevin Langley and Peter Beagrie wore the blue of Everton.
