Now, he finds himself out of favour with the Latics and set to be a free agent when his contract expires in the summer.
Ligue 1 club Valenciennes have offered de Ridder a life line as they search for a new winger.
Valenciennes chairman Francis Decourriere told L'Equipe: "He is on trial for at least one week," "He is a real winger and since the departures of Fahid Ben Khalfallah to Bordeaux and Johan Audel to Stuttgart, that is what we miss the most. The injury to Gaetan Bong has also hurt us and left us a little short."
The 26 year old is yet to make an appearance for the club this season.
