Cotterill given Toshack warning

David Cotterill: Out of favour
Cotterill started his Wigan career brightly, but has since slowed and did not look interested in his last substitute appearance against Everton. The young Wales international is now seemingly out of favour both with club and country.

Toshack is quoted: "I have also spoken to Duffy and Cotterill and explained my reasons. The last few times they have been with us, we were not entirely happy with them.

"They could have done more, they have not shown up in training as much as they had previously. They will be disappointed, but they are not as disappointed as I am.

"For Cotterill, the move to Wigan does not seem to have gone particularly well for him. He almost joined Norwich and then changed at the last minute. He has not looked as sharp in training as he had done previously, when he was still at Bristol City."

Antonio Valenica has secured the right wing spot for the final two games of the season, meaning Cotterill will have to make do with a place on the bench. His previous substitute performance, against Everton was very poor, and he has been out of the picture since.

With manager Paul Jewell this week asking his players to perform in training, Cotterill may yet have a chance to recover some first team minutes this season.

Certainly, the David Cotterill of his early Wigan career is just what the Latics could do with at the moment. The question is, does the youngster want it enough...
