Gohouri joined on a short term contract last season and after impressing boss Roberto Martinez, he was awarded a two year contract this summer.

Now the Ivorian international defender is hoping to repay the faith shown in him by boss Martinez. He told the Wigan Evening Post: “I was so happy to see my team-mates again after the break.

“I enjoyed last season but I will be even more settled here this year, I know the town now, and I’m happy. I think Wigan will do well this season. We will try to go again and defy the odds.

“I am honoured that my name is being associated with the captain’s armband. That means I have leadership skills.

“I have been a captain before so it will be an honour to wear it but, with it or without it, I will repay Wigan and Roberto Martinez for showing faith in me. I owe him and the club a lot.”

The defender is so keen to impress this season that he arrived back to training a number of days earlier than his fellow World Cup counterparts. A starting place alongside fellow World Cup participant, Antolin Alcaraz is likely for the visit of Blackpool on Saturday.
