Cleverley hoping to follow Fletcher example

Sir Alex Ferguson has commented in the recent past that Cleverley has a very bright future within the game.

This was enforced by the battle that Roberto Martinez had to fight to win the signature of the England under 21 international. Both Bolton and Newcastle were also interested in signing the goalscoring midfielder.

Cleverley, who scored 15 goals in 33 appearances for Watford last season, is ineligible for Wigan's visit to Old Trafford this weekend as he is not allowed to face his parent club.

However he has made no secret of his desire to one day be a key player for Sir Alex Ferguson's side. In particular, Cleverley has highlighted Darren Fletcher's rise to prominence as a shining example for players like himself.

He said: "He (Darren Fletcher) got where he is through hard work and talent and I respect him for that. When you play for United you don't have to look for idols."

Cleverley also had words of praise for fellow United players, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov, he added: "I saw the attention United get worldwide and thought, 'Wow!' But I still felt like a kid in a team of men.

“We played in front of 70,000 in places like Houston and it went well for me. I was playing alongside Scholes, who has brilliant technique and never gives the ball away. The passing is the difference at United.

“There are so few mistakes and the control of players like Dimitar Berbatov in small spaces is unmatched.”
