Chimbonda upset by Latics boo boys

Last updated : 26 December 2009 By Paul Farrington

Chimbonda left the club under a cloud in 2006 after handing in a transfer request in the changing room after the final game of the season at Highbury.

Unsurprisingly this didn't go down to well and the flamboyant defender was immediately on his way out of hte club. The Latics managed to get around £4.5 million for the defender.

Three and a half years have now passed, but hte ill feeling is still their and Chimbonda is likely to be booed again today as he visits the DW Stadium with Blackburn Rovers.

At the time he left the Latics Chimbonda had just been named in the PFA team of the year and had been called up into the French national squad.

The glove wearing defender told the Blackburn Rovers official website: "Every time I go back to Wigan they boo me. Maybe for them it is normal, but for me it isn't. I had one good year at Wigan and I did my best every time I went out on the pitch.

"But when you get the opportunity to move to a club on a different level you can't refuse that. It was a good opportunity to move to Spurs and to play in Europe, so that is why I left."

Quite ironic that he considered his move to Tottenham a step up as he never made a national apperance for France and has never been near the squad since. He is also now visiting the DW Stadium with our local neighbours and rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Also revisiting the DW Stadium today is Jason Roberts. The striker is likely to get a somewhat better reception from the Latics fans.

Roberts played a very big part in helping keep the Latics up in 2006, and also in the cup run that ended up with the club's first major cup final appearance.
