Manchester City, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Aston Villa are all said to be interested in Murphy who is said to be seeking a move away from the Valley after a recent fall-out with manager Alan Curbishley.

The former Liverpool midfielder's early season form had him tipped for an England place, and he has managed five goals so far this term.

Dean Kiely, 35, is also rumoured to be a target for Paul Jewell who is keen to add another goalkeeper to his squad.

The Irish international stopper is unhappy at his lack of match action with Stephan Andersen taking over in-between the sticks.

Kiely would be available on a free transfer according to sources at the Valley.

Boaz Myhill of Hull City and Lewis Price of Ipswich are other goalkeepers being linked with the JJB.

Two other names being linked are 27 year old striker Cedric Roussel from Standard Liege. The Belgian striker has previously had spells in England with Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the midlands.

Benjani Mwaruwari is the other name, and Sky Sports are reporting that the Zimbabwean has been the subject of an official bid from the Latics.

Meanwhile Paul Scharner, who has already signed for the Latics is in line to make his debut on Saturday in the F.A. Cup against Leeds United.
