Carroll prices himself out of Latics move

Jewell said: "Roy Carroll is a very good goalkeeper, but if he turned down £20,000-a-week at United it's hardly likely that he will be coming here.

"I am looking to bring in another keeper. John Filan will be our number one, but we need to strengthen in that area."

Carroll left Wigan four years ago and moved to neighbours Manchester United in a £2.5 million move.

Initially he was Fabian Barthez's understudy but became the club's number one goalkeeper when the French World Cup winner left.

Carroll is now likely to move abroad in his search for a new club.
