Wigan boss Steve Bruce wants to only sell players in the January transfer window who are surplus to requirements. Attention surrounds key players with moves to other Premier League clubs with Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia, Amr Zaki and of course Emile Heskey being linked with moves away from the JJB.

Contrary to reports that said Bruce was told he must to sell before he can buy, funds are available to strengthen the squad in January.

The club are ten points better off than last season with aims of a top ten finish on the minds of most at the club, once the threat of relegation has been eradicated that is.

With this improvement in return for points, rumours surrounding some players has led to Bruce stating that he is determined to keep hold of members of his playing staff despite constant speculation.

'We're going all right at the moment. The good thing for me is that we're ten points better off than we were this time last year,'

'I have the makings of a really good team. The hardest part is holding on to them all, that could be a real challenge.'

'Let's see what January brings, but I'm under no pressure to cash in on anybody, the chairman has made that clear.'

'The last thing I want to do is dismantle what we have put together.'

With Wigan only seven points off 5th spot and four points off 18th place, the transfer window will be an important time for the club which could lead to a push for Europe or a relegation dog fight.
