Black arrived at the club shortly after Bruce with the pair both coming from Birmingham City. Said to work well together, the pair have produced an upturn in the club's fortunes during their short spell at the JJB Stadium to date.

Speaking about the Sky Blues offer, Bruce told the club's official website: "When you have someone of Eric's calibre, it is inevitable that he is going to attract interest from elsewhere, it's not a problem, if anything, it's a compliment.

"We are at the beginning of a long journey and we all want to see it through. The potential at this club is immense. The club has come such a long way in a short space of time, and our job now is to consolidate our position in the Premier League. That job will be made a lot easier with people like Eric on board."

Whilst Black himself added: "Unfinished business doesn't cover it, it's only just started business! We've got a really exciting project here, and I'm enjoying every minute. I'm very flattered to be linked with jobs but at the moment all my focus is on helping Wigan Athletic stay in the Premier League. Nothing else matters for the next three months!"

Meanwhile, as everyone knows, Saturday sees the return of former manager Paul Jewell to the JJB Stadium. The former Latic is likely to receive a muted welcome from the wigan fans after his remarks about Derby's "fantastic" support in recent weeks.
