Bruce hoping for strong finish

The Latics are sitting pretty in the top half of the table and have had a good season, despite losing two key players in January.

Now Steve Bruce wants his players to finish the season strongly and remain in the top half of the table.

He said: "The mentality at the club last season was all geared to staying in the Premier League which we achieved in the second-to-last game by beating Aston Villa.

"The year before, the club had to wait until the final game at Sheffield United to stay up and did so by one goal. I hope the mentality is different now. It's not enough to think that we have done our job.

"We still have seven games to play, five of them against sides who aren't safe from relegation. We have a lot to play for yet. We want to finish as high as we can and we owe that to the supporters and ourselves.

"Every season a club like ours has to start out with the intention of getting safe, but with the good position we are now in, I want us to kick on. I will keep on at them, get back to some hard work on the training ground."

The Latics face Arsenal at the JJB Stadium on Saturday and the game is close to a sell out.
