Bruce earns £1m bonus

Survival was achieved with a fantastic 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday and Dave Whelan is delighted with the progress under Bruce.

He told the Wigan Observer: "He'll look forward to the bonus - he's earned it. Steve has been fantastic for us and kept us up brilliantly. He's the best manager we could have got after we lost Paul Jewell.

"If we play like we have been doing under Steve we will finish in the top half next season. We played brilliantly at Villa. We outplayed them all over the park 0 we were fantastic. We played supremely well."

Alongside the £1 million bonus for Bruce comes the final £1 million installment of the £3 million fee paid for Bruce to Birmingham. Despite appearing to be a foolish move at the time, the fee is a drop in the ocean now after achieving survival.
